Ingredients:
For the pizza dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
For the pizza toppings:
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Your favorite pizza toppings (e.g., pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, olives, etc.)
- Fresh basil leaves (optional)
- Olive oil (for brushing)
Instructions:
Make the pizza dough:
- In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Add olive oil and salt to the yeast mixture.
- Gradually add the flour while mixing until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Form the dough into a ball, place it in a bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise for about 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.
Prepare the toppings:
- While the dough is rising, prepare your pizza toppings. Chop and prepare all the ingredients you want to use.
Assemble the skillet pizza:
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into two equal-sized balls. You can make two smaller pizzas or save one for later.
- Roll out one of the dough balls on a floured surface to your desired thickness.
- Heat a large skillet (preferably oven-safe) over medium-high heat. Add a little oil to the skillet.
- Carefully transfer the rolled-out dough to the hot skillet. Cook it for about 2-3 minutes on one side until it puffs up and gets some color.
Add toppings:
- Flip the pizza crust to the other side.
- Spread half of the pizza sauce over the crust, leaving a small border around the edges for the crust.
- Sprinkle half of the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce.
- Add your desired toppings on top of the cheese.
Cook the pizza:
- Cover the skillet with a lid and cook the pizza for about 5-7 minutes on low heat. This will help melt the cheese and cook the toppings.
- Alternatively, you can also place the skillet under a broiler for a couple of minutes to melt and brown the cheese.
Garnish and serve:
- Once the cheese is melted and the crust is cooked through, remove the skillet from the heat.
- If desired, garnish the pizza with fresh basil leaves and a drizzle of olive oil.
- Carefully slide the pizza onto a cutting board, slice it, and serve hot.
Enjoy your homemade skillet pizza without using an oven! Repeat the process with the second dough ball if you saved it, or you can refrigerate it for later use.
